Summer is just around the corner, and you\u2019re thinking about taking on a student job? Great idea! But before you get started, make sure you understand the rules \u2014 so you don\u2019t risk losing your child benefit or running into tax surprises. Here\u2019s a quick overview.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Child benefit: how many hours can you work?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n
\n

If you live in the Brussels-Capital Region, you can work up to 240 hours per quarter<\/strong> without losing your right to child benefit. Even better: this limit doesn\u2019t apply in<\/strong> July, August, and September<\/strong>, as long as you continue your studies after the summer.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

All working hours count, even those under a regular employment contract. However, hours worked as part of a mandatory internship or alternating training programme are not included.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

Are you under 18<\/strong>? Then you\u2019re entitled to child benefit no matter how many hours you work. From age 18, the rules depend on where you live.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

\n

Social contributions: the famous 600 hours<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n
\n

As a student worker, you get a\u00a0quota of 600 hours per year<\/strong>\u00a0during which you and your employer pay reduced social contributions<\/strong>. You can use these hours whenever you like. If you go over the limit, you\u2019ll pay regular contributions\u2014just like any other employee.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

You can check your remaining hours on https:\/\/www.studentatwork.be or via the Student@work app. Log in with itsme or your eID.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Taxes: do you need to file a return?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n
\n

You can earn up to \u20ac15,100 gross per year<\/strong> (after social contributions) without paying taxes. But you must always file a tax return<\/strong>. If you earn more, you\u2019ll have to pay taxes yourself.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Staying dependent on your parents?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n
\n

To remain fiscally dependent on your parents, your annual income must not exceed \u20ac12,422.50 gross<\/strong>. If you earn more, your parents will lose this tax benefit and may have to pay more taxes.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
