My child has been placed in foster care. Am I still entitled to child benefit?

If your child has been placed in foster care – whether temporarily or for a longer period – the foster parent receives the child benefit. Were you receiving child benefit before the placement? If so, you may be eligible for a flat-rate allowance, a fixed monthly amount provided while your child is in foster care.

Who can receive this allowance?

When a child is placed in a private home setting (such as with a foster family or a relative), a fixed amount of €79,93 per month may be granted to the parent or person who was receiving child benefit just before the placement.

No flat-rate allowance is granted if the child is placed in an institution.

Conditions for receiving this allowance

You may qualify for the allowance if you:

  • maintain regular contact with the child,
  • or show active interest in their well-being.

If this is no longer the case, the allowance may be transferred to another person – such as another parent or a family member – who:

  • contributes to the child’s upbringing,
  • and maintains regular contact or shows genuine interest.

Famiris bases its decision on information provided by the official body responsible for the placement.

What do you need to do?

You don’t need to take any action. Famiris automatically receives the necessary information from the organization involved in your child’s placement.
