Flemish school allowance 2025: what Brussels families need to know
Posted on 7 August 2025
The Flemish school allowance is a yearly financial support for families with a limited income. It helps cover school-related costs for children in Dutch-language education. Please note: this allowance is granted by the Flemish government and not paid by Famiris.
What is the Flemish school allowance?
The Flemish school allowance is part of the Groeipakket, the Flemish child benefit system.
Brussels families may also be eligible. The allowance is paid by one of the Flemish Groeipakket payment agencies.
The amount depends on:
- your family income,
- the number of children in your household,
- and the type of education your child is enrolled in.
Payments are made between the end of August and December.
Who can receive it?
Even if you live in Brussels, you may be entitled to the Flemish school allowance if:
- your child is enrolled in a recognised Dutch-language school in Brussels or Flanders,
- and your family income is below a certain threshold.
Children attending French-language education are not eligible for this Flemish allowance.

Brussels families must apply themselves
To receive the Flemish school allowance, you must submit an application to a Flemish Groeipakket payment fund: FONS, Infino, Kidslife, MyFamily or Parentia (unless you already have a file there because you received a school allowance in the past).
You will continue to receive your Brussels child benefits and any Brussels supplements via Famiris.
But for the Flemish school allowance, a separate action is required.
How to apply?
All information and the application form are available on the website of the Groeipakket.
