When are you eligible for the Flemish school allowance?

Posted on 19 August 2024

Do you live in Brussels and does your child attend a recognized Flemish school? Then you might be eligible for the school allowance from the Groeipakket (the Flemish child benefit). The amount depends on your income. You can apply for the school allowance from a Groeipakket payment fund.

What is the school allowance?

The school allowance is an annual financial support from the Flemish government for families with school-going children and a low income. Brussels children who attend a recognized Flemish school may also be eligible for the Flemish government’s school allowance. The school allowance is paid between the end of August and December. The amount depends on household income, family size, and the type of education.

Applying for the school allowance

Since the school allowance is a Flemish benefit, you can only apply for it from a Flemish child benefit (Groeipakket) payment fund. You will, of course, continue to receive your monthly Brussels child benefit and any Brussels supplements from Famiris.
