What is the difference between a maternity allowance and child benefit?

The maternity allowance and child benefit are financial aids designed to support Brussels families with children. As a public child benefit fund, Famiris pays the family allowance and child benefit on behalf of the Brussels government.

Conditions

If you live in Brussels, you can receive a maternity allowance for the birth of your child. After the birth, you must officially register your child with the municipality as soon as possible. In the case of adoption, you are also entitled to this allowance.

For children residing in Brussels, we also provide monthly child benefits.

The main differences

Payment frequency

  • Maternity allowance: one-time payment
  • Child benefit: monthly payment

Purpose

  • Maternity allowance: a one-time support payment to help cover initial costs related to the birth of a child (e.g., diapers, crib).
  • Child benefit: monthly support for the upbringing and care of your children (e.g., food, clothing, school supplies).

Application procedure

  • Maternity allowance: can be requested from 4 months before the expected due date up to 3 years after the birth.

Amounts

  • Maternity allowance: the amount varies depending on whether it is your first child or not. For multiple births, the highest amount is always granted.
  • Child benefit: the amount depends on the number of children in your family, their age, and your family’s specific situation (e.g., a child with a disability, a family with a limited income).
