Is an orphan entitled to orphan’s allowance?

Yes, a Brussels orphan is entitled to additional child benefits. In the event of the death of one or both parents, Famiris pays an orphan’s allowance for the orphaned child.

What is the amount of this orphan’s allowance?

Calculate the amount of your Brussels child benefits yourself with our handy calculator.

The child became an orphan in 2020 or later

  • A Brussels child who has lost one parent is entitled to the basic amount plus half of that amount extra.
  • A child who has lost both parents or their only parent is entitled to double the basic amount.

Any supplements related to family income or the child’s disability are added to this.

The child became an orphan before 2020

The orphan’s allowance amounts to €457,60 per child. This amount is increased with the age supplement and any additional supplement if the child has a disability or condition.

What if the surviving parent starts cohabiting again?

The orphan’s allowance is paid until the right to child benefits ends. It does not matter if the surviving parent starts cohabiting again or (re)marries.

This rule was introduced in 2020 with the new Brussels child benefits and also applies to children who became orphans before 2020.

What do I need to do to receive the orphan’s allowance?

You don’t need to do anything yourself. Famiris is automatically notified of a death.

The orphan’s allowance is paid to:

  • the surviving parent,
  • or, if both parents are deceased, to the person raising the child,
  • or to the child themselves.
