How much maternity allowance do I get?
You can get maternity allowance (also called a birth grant) when your baby is born — or even before, during pregnancy.
There are two possible amounts, depending on your situation:
- €1.367,74: first birth and multiple births
- €621,70: from the second birth onwards
These amounts apply in Brussels and have been adjusted for indexation since 1 February 2025.
When do you get the higher amount?
You get €1.367,74 if:
- The baby is the first child of one of the parents (even if the other parent already has children)
- You have a multiple birth (twins, triplets, etc.), even if you already have children
When do you get the lower amount?
You get €621,70 if:
- You already have one or more children (in Belgium or abroad)
- The other parent also has children (in Belgium or abroad)
- And it is not a multiple birth
So please note: when calculating the maternity allowance, we also take into account children who were born abroad or currently live there.
